· Nutrition and Exercise
· Nutrition and Public Health
Duration
The duration of the Full-Time Program is one and a half (1,5) year minimum and two and two and a half (2,5) years maximum, whereas for the Part-Time program is two and a half (2,5) years minimum and three and a half (3,5) years maximum
In case maximum time is exceeded, the P.P.G.A may disqualify the student. The P.P.G.A. may grant an extension of study duration only after the need is adequately substantiated by the student and his academic advisor.
Postgraduate Student Admission Process
a) Every year during the Spring Semester the Department publishes an invitation for candidate admission to the Postgraduate Program for the next academic year in two (2) daily newspapers in Athens and two (2) in Thessaloniki. The invitation is also forwarded to all relevant Ministries, Public and Private Legal Entities, as well as to relevant professional entities.
b) Candidates can apply for the P.P. within one (1) month of publication date. Applications must include all necessary certificates and supporting documents. Incomplete applications are not taken into consideration.
c) Eligible for admission to the P.P. are students who hold a degree from a Department of Nutrition and Dietetics in Greece, other Departments in Greece offering similar in content degrees, from equivalent Institutions abroad or from Technological Educational Institutes (TEI).
d) Tuition rates are set by the Senate.
e) The total number of students to be admitted to the Postgraduate Program depends on:
· the ability of the scientific personnel and the Institution to effectively run the P.P.
· the commitments of the Faculty as regards to their responsibilities towards the undergraduate program of studies
· the available facilities of the Institution
· the Program's scientific fields of interest
· the country's needs for specialized scientific personnel
Besides the total number of students to be admitted to the Program there is also provision for one (1) scholarship holder sponsored by the State Scholarships Foundation and one (1) scholarship holder from abroad, sponsored by the Hellenic State.
f) In order to ensure objectivity in the candidate evaluation process the P.P.G.A. forms a three-member Admissions Committee composed of A.R.S. members. All candidate applications and supporting documents are forwarded to the committee for evaluation. The committee's duties are:
· to examine whether the applications were submitted in due time
· to assess all submitted certificates
· to assesss the applicants' competence in the English language. Adequate competence in English is confirmed by one of the following: a Certificate of Proficiency in English (Cambridge or Michigan), a TOEFL score of least 80 points, an IELTS score of at least 6/9 points, a State Certificate in English Language level C2, a written examination held at Harokopio University. Applicants who hold undergraduate or postgraduate degrees from English-speaking universities recognized by the National Academic Recognition Information Center are exempted from this obligation
· to conduct written and/or oral examinations
· to rank candidates according to their test results and credentials
g) Final grades result from the following:
· undergraduate degree classification and/or course grades
· relevant scientific experience
· scientific publications
· interview
The P.P.G.A. may modify the aforementioned ranking criteria before the publication of the invitation in the daily press.
h) The Admissions Committee decides in July and submits its proposals (ranking and possibly the need for specific students to attend undergraduate classes) to the P.P.G.A. for approval. The list of successful applicants is published in July. Registration takes place in September.
Awards of Excellence
The Postgraduate Program confers awards of excellence per semester. The awards are accompanied by monetary rewards. The terms concerning the granting of these awards are decided upon by the P.P.G.A. after C.C. proposal.

Requirements for the Acquisition of a Master's Degree
a) The Master's Degree is awarded on the basis of:
· successful course attendance and involvement in teaching and research activities for a total of 50 credit hours or 120 ECTS and
· successful completion of either a Research Thesis or a non-Research Thesis (research paper) under the supervision of an appointed A.R.S. member.
b) After a relevant proposal by the C.C. and upon agreement by the students, the P.P.G.A. assigns each postgraduate student a supervisor who must be an A.R.S. member from the Department Nutrition and Dietetics of Harokopio University. This process concludes the first month of the 2nd Semester. The C.C. and the Supervisor are responsible for monitoring and supervising the student's progress. Researchers at recognized research institutions who hold a PhD, as well as other A.R.S. or R.S. members may also be appointed as co-supervisors.
c) The Thesis of each student is structured on the responsibility and initiative of the Supervisor and concludes at the end of the 3rd Semester. At that point, the P.P.G.A. assigns the student two more supervisors, thus forming a three-member committee. The supervisors may be i) A.R.S. members from the Department Nutrition and Dietetics or from any other department of Harokopio University, ii) A.R.S. or R.S. members from other departments in Greece or abroad, iii) level A, B or C researchers at recognized Research Centers or Institutions in Greece or abroad, given that they have PhDs and recognized scientific work. The committee members' specialty must be either the same or relevant to the program's focus.
According to the Internal Regulation of the Postgraduate Program, two types of Master's Theses are provided:
· Research Thesis: It constitutes original research work. Master's Degree holders who produce a research thesis have the right to apply for the P.P. for a Doctoral Degree.
· Non-Research Thesis: It represents an extensive and thorough review of the literature on a scientific topic of great interest or another kind of significant project that, however, is not considered original research work. Master's Degree holders who produce a non-research thesis do not have the right to apply for the P.P. for a Doctoral Degree, unless they meet the requirements described above.
d) Preparation of the Research Thesis
The preparation of the thesis involves research data collection and processing, as well as statistical data analysis.
e) Writing of the Research Thesis
After data collection and analysis follows the writing of the thesis, either in Greek or in English. The thesis must present in a clear and consistent manner the research problem, the project's nature and importance, a review of the relevant literature, the research methodology, the findings, discussion on the findings and considerations for further research. Detailed guidelines on writing a Research Master's Thesis are provided in "Postgraduate Dissertation Guidelines".
f) Thesis Defense and Assessment
After the completion of the thesis and the assertive opinion of the Supervisor, the candidate submits a copy to the Three-Member Committee and an application accompanied by an abstract of the thesis and a short curriculum vitae to the P.P. Secretariat. The Supervisor schedules the thesis defense within 30 days of submission. Subsequently the Secretariat circulates within the Academic Community a publication including the thesis abstract, the candidate's curriculum vitae and an announcement of the defense date.
Responsible for the final examination and assessment of the Master's Thesis is the Three-Member Committee. For approval, the agreement of at least two (2) members is required. In case the student fails, the C.C. schedules a new assessment date, at least three (3) months of the first.
The student is required to submit one (1) electronic copy of the approved Master's Thesis, including the corrections possibly suggested by the Assessment Committee, to the University library.
Assessment
a) Solely responsible for course assessment and grading is the instructor of each course. Assessment and grading in one course is not affected by the student's progress in other courses. On the contrary, it is the result of the objective evaluation of the student's performance in each specific course
b) Final course grade depends on the student's performance in a number of specific fields (i.e. coursework, presentations, examinations) in accordance with the instructions provided by each instructor in the beginning of the semester
c) Student assessment is based on a ten-point scale (accuracy to one decimal place):
Excellent 8.6-10.0
Very Good 7.1-8.5
Good 6.0-7.0
Minimum passing grade is 6.0
d) Only one (1) failure in each course is accepted. Failure is defined as:
- final course grade below 6.0
- non-fulfillment of course obligations (coursework, presentations, etc.) during the semester the course takes place in.
Re-examination may be held in September. On second failure the C.C. proposes for the P.P.G.A. to consider either the student's disqualification or the transfer of the decision to a three-member committee. This committee shall consist of the course instructor and two A.R.S. members of relevant specialty.
